An alternative way to play Liar’s Dice

πŸ‘₯ Recommended Players

  • 4 players

🧰 Items Needed

  • 4 cups

  • 12 six-sided dice (3 per player)

  • A way to track points (e.g., phone or paper)

πŸ›  Setup

  • Each player gets 1 cup and 3 dice.

  • Play on a flat surface.

  • To decide who goes first in the first round, each player rolls one die. The highest number starts. If there’s a tie, those players re-roll until someone wins!

  • Choose the maximum number of points a player needs to win the game. The following are some recommendations:

    • Quick Game – First to 50 points. Great for short, fast-paced sessions (about 10–20 minutes).

    • Standard Game – First to 75 points. Balanced for most groups (around 20–30 minutes).

    • Full Game – First to 100 points. Best for longer, more strategic play (around 30–45 minutes).

🎲 How to Play

βœ… Starting a Round

  • Everyone puts their 3 dice into their cup.

  • Shake the cup face down on the surface to randomize the dice.

  • Secretly peek at your dice without revealing them to others.

♻️ Taking Turns

Players take turns in clockwise order. On your turn, choose one of the following actions:

(Note: The first player can only guess.)

1. Guess 🧐🎲

Make a claim about how many dice (in total) show a specific number across all players.
Your guess must be higher than the previous guess in at least one of these ways:

  • More dice (e.g., from β€œ2 dice showing 4” to β€œ3 dice showing 4”)

  • Higher number (e.g., from β€œ2 dice showing 4” to β€œ2 dice showing 5”)

  • Both (e.g., β€œ2 dice showing 4” to β€œ3 dice showing 5”)

Maximums:

  • Quantity: Up to 12 dice

  • Die number: Up to 6

2. Watch πŸ‘€β—

You choose to stop participating in the round after already making a guess.

  • You can only Watch if you’ve made at least one guess.

  • Once you Watch, you can’t take any more actions this round.

Scoring Note:

  • Your last guess still counts at the end of the round.

  • But if it turns out to be correct, you only earn reduced points:
You score whichever is higher between the quantity or number of your guess.

  • Example: If your guess was β€œ3 dice showing 4” β†’ you earn 4 points instead of 12.

3. Doubt πŸ€¨β“

Challenge the last guess made. All players immediately reveal their dice, and the round ends.

Scoring:

  • If the last guess was correct:

    • The guesser earns quantity Γ— number points.

    • The doubter loses points equal to the higher of the quantity or number from the guess.

  • If the last guess was incorrect:

    • The guesser loses quantity Γ— number points.

    • The doubter earns points equal to the higher of the quantity or number from the guess.

🏁 Ending a Round

A round ends when:

  • A player doubts the previous guess,
    or

  • All players have either made a guess or chosen to Watch, and only one guess remains active.

At the end of the round:

  • Everyone reveals their dice.

  • All valid guesses (including reduced ones from Watchers) are checked.

  • Points are awarded or deducted accordingly.

The next round begins with the player who is next in the turn order.

πŸ₯³ How to Win

The game ends when a player reaches the maximum score (set before the game starts).

  • However, if a player's score would exceed the maximum due to points earned in a round, those points do not count.

Example:
If the maximum score is 100 and a player has 96 points, then earns 10 points that round, their total remains 96 — the 10 points are discarded.
